Garment exports income raised again

Income from garment exports has now been raised to 43 per cent, from the 32 pc income during the Rajapaksa regime, said primary industries minister Daya Gamage.

The 800 garment factories that brought in 54 pc of the country’s income has reduced to 150 now, he said.


The minister was speaking at the opening of the Sangaman Gramam village under the village reawakening concept at Tirukkovil in Ampara.


Minister Sajith Gamage too, participated.


Speaking further, minister Gamage said the new village would help in the development of the district.


The occupants would be given five TJC mango plants each, to earn an income from their gardens.


Minister Gamage said 25 mango trees could bring in an income of Rs. 300,000.


Also, 30,000 farmer families would be assisted to do big onion cultivation, he said adding that a Rs. 75,000 income could be earned from big onion cultivation in the gardens.


He also explained the support given to develop the fisheries sector.
