Chip Nellinger from Blue Reef Agri-Marketing says Thursday’s Prospective Plantings Report may be getting all the pre-game coverage, but on Thursday at 11:00 CT your focus should be on March 1 corn stocks. He told AgriTalk After the Bell host Chip Flory that inventories of cattle, hogs and broilers are large enough that some market-watchers may be underestimating second-quarter 2017-18 feed use. Nellinger added the planting intentions data is done too early in the year to be considered a reliable indicator of actual plantings. “We’ll likely have to wait until January – again – to get the actual acreage number,” said Nellinger. “Until then, weather and its impact on yield is more important than these acreage estimates.”
