Nursing assistant accused of stealing from patients at Iowa City VA Health Care System

IOWA CITY — A former nursing assistant with the Iowa City VA Health Care System is accused of stealing more than $1,000 from her patients.

According to a criminal complaint from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Police Department, between March 27, 2017 and Oct. 10, roughly $1,180 cash was reported missing from patients at the Iowa City VA hospital. An investigation determined that all of the patients who reported thefts had been staying in units assigned to 43-year-old Kadene M. Donlon, who was working at the time as a nursing assistant.

Authorities said Donlon’s co-workers reported observing her interacting with patients or their property. Donlon admitted to taking money from patients, authorities said. The Iowa City VA Health Care System confirmed Donlon is no longer employed there.

Donlon was arrested Sunday evening and faces one count of second-degree theft, a Class D felony punishable by up to five years in prison.
