Today’s Google Doodle marks the 45th anniversary of the ‘Chipko movement’. The goal of the ‘Chipko Movement’ was to prevent deforestation from rapid industrialization .This movement was initiated by Social Activist Sunderlal Bhauguna in 1973 in Uttar Pradesh.

The Google doodle depicts four women covered in traditional attire, holding hands and forming a chain around a tree, with the fauna which are resident of the forest portrayed as spectators to this scene of solidarity that is played out on a starry night.

The word ‘chipko’ means ‘to hug’ and ‘to stick’, people in the villages of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh saved trees in large numbers during this moment. This whole movement was carried forward by female clan. Some of the key figures that were part of the Chipko Movement were Amrita Singh, Dhoom Singh Negi, Bachni Devi, Gaura Devi and Sudesha Devi.
