Beginning in the mid 1960s, Mercedes engineers Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher started working on a race engine at a place called Daimer Benz.
This then proved to be the engine used in the 300 SE, the fastest production car in Germany at the time, producing 120kW.
