Brandon Workman will begin the 2018 baseball season in the minor leagues.
The former Bowie and University of Texas standout was optioned to Triple A Pawtucket on Monday as the Boston Red Sox announced multiple roster moves.
In his first season back since Tommy John surgery, Workman was one of Boston’s most dependable relievers in the latter half of 2017, posting a 1-1 record and 3.18 ERA in 39.2 innings. Workman had a stretch of 13 straight appearances starting July 24 without allowing an earned run.
Workman also began the 2017 season in the minors and only made two appearances with the Red Sox before July 15.
The 29-year-old righthander had a 5.59 ERA and 1.76 WHIP in 9.2 innings during spring training.
