New Mt. Pleasant Mexican restaurant to open Thursday

A new Mexican restaurant is set to open its doors in Mt. Pleasant this week, taking over a building on the south end of town occupied twice before by eateries.

Los Amigos Mexican Restaurant, located at 4520 Collegiate Way, announced on social media that its opening day is set for Thursday.

“We have food for every type of person and we want to be welcoming to everyone,” said Tania Chavez, who will be a manager in the restaurant her boyfriend Gabriel Cortes owns.

Both Chavez and Cortes are from Midland, but picked Mt. Pleasant because they liked the location.

The restaurant has posted a full menu on Facebook; it features typical Mexican restaurant fair such as tacos, burritos and nachos, along with appetizers like carne asada fries and grilled cheese quesadilla.

The menu lists lunch specials and vegetarian options as well, and Chavez said they can accommodate other dietary needs.

Among the restaurant’s offerings, Chavez said she feels fajitas will quickly be a crowd favorite.

“Fajitas are very popular and they taste different depending on the chef’s style. Gabriel likes to cook everything, he just enjoys cooking a lot,” she said.

The opening day announcement answers a question circling Mt. Pleasant: what is moving into the building that once also housed Bar-B-Cutie and Killer Hibatchi but has stood empty in recent times.

To start, Chavez said Los Amigos will be open from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. but those hours could change depending on the customers.

Los Amigos —”the friends”— earned its name because Cortes wants to be open and friendly to all, Chavez said.

“Gabriel wants to make friends. He doesn’t’ want just customers he wants to be friends, he wants to be open and he wants to be open to suggestions,” she said. “We want to make customers happy.”
