Microsoft campus in city to grow

Tech major also set to increase its headcount

The India Development Centre of Microsoft, one of the largest R&D facilities outside the Redmond headquarters of the technology major, is set to see an increase in its headcount as well as the built-up area.

A fourth building, to be designed for 2,500 people, will come up on the sprawling 54-acre campus of Microsoft in the city. The expansion, of the campus that was established in 1998, comes in the backdrop of the company running out of space, as evident from the leasing of additional space, temporarily at another location in the city to house 1,000 professionals.

Corporate vice-president, Cloud and Enterprise, and managing director of Microsoft India (R&D) Pvt Ltd Anil Bhansali said the ground breaking for the fourth building, at the existing campus, would happen soon. The details of the expansion were being worked out, he said. Microsoft now has over 8,000 employees, engaged in sales and marketing, R&D and customer services and support, across 11 cities in India.

Mr. Bhansali was responding to media queries after Industries and IT Minister K.T. Rama Rao, inaugurating The Garage at the campus, complimented Microsoft for its decision to expand in the city. Noting that the company’s need for more space had made it go out of the campus and lease space to accommodate 1,000 people, the Minister hoped the proposed building would be better than the existing facilities at the campus and help add 2,500 people.
