When the Del. 141/Basin Road bridge over U.S. 13 closed in early October, it was supposed to be a minor inconvenience. The initial plan for the more than 60-year-old bridge was to reconstruct it and have it open again in about 45 days -- in time for Thanksgiving.
The bridge re-opened to traffic Monday afternoon, about four months later than initially planned.
"We are very happy to announce that the Route 141 Basin Road Bridge over Route 13 has reopened to traffic this afternoon. This project has been a major inconvenience for area residents and businesses," DelDOT said in a statement.
DelDOT acknowledged the hardship the closing caused for local businesses during the closure.
The delay was due to unforeseen problems, including asbestos conduit pipe discovered during demolition.
