CEDAR RAPIDS — A car that had gone into the Cedar River earlier this month has been recovered.

Cedar Rapids public safety spokesman Greg Buelow said that the Cedar Rapids police and fire departments worked with the Johnson County Dive Team to remove a 2006 Buick Lucerne from the river at the Mohawk boat ramp, 101 J Ave. NW. The car had been in the river since March 11.

Authorities responded to the boat ramp around 4:44 p.m. March 11 for a report of a car going in the river. Buelow said boaters helped pull a woman and two children from the river.

Buelow said Monday that the car will be stored as evidence in the police storage evidence area.

“The evidentiary of the vehicle may be diminished by the vehicle being in the water since March 11, but it is not critical to the case because investigators have interviewed a number of witnesses and obtained other information regarding the case,” he said.

The woman remains hospitalized and investigators have yet to interview her, Buelow said. Investigators will work with the county attorney’s office to determine whether charges are appropriate in the case.
