BOZEMAN, Mont. (AP) - The Montana Football Hall of Fame inducted eight new members over the weekend, but one man declined his nomination.

Former Montana State and New York Giants player Corey Widmer, 49, said concussions he suffered while playing football “destroyed my life.” He fears he suffers from degenerative brain damage. He has depression, memory problems, mood swings and his thumb has started twitching.

The Bozeman native says he couldn’t in good conscience part a part of an event celebrating a sport that caused great suffering among his friends and that he believes endangers children.

Widmer says he decided to go public with his reasoning after reading a news story about a 16-year-old Belt High School student who suffered a concussion in a 2014 game and collapsed after playing the next weekend, leaving him nearly paralyzed and unable to speak.
