Richard Kersley, the Author of the Credit Suisse Research Institute Survey on Indian Consumer Behaviour and Head-Global Equity Research Product, Credit Suisse.

According to the survey, India continues to maintain the number one positon in Emerging Consumer Survey 2018, for the fourth year in the row.

Kersley said India is on the top of the position but all the other economies that are under the survey are also seeing improvement in consumer sentiment, especially economies like Brazil and Russia.

Talking about the disruptions with regards to demonetisation and GST that India faced, he said the negatives effects of demonetisation have been washed out to some extent. However, the impact from GST will be monitored from here on. It looks like there is a movement from the unorganised sector to organised because of GST.

When asked which sector is expected to grow stronger between consumer discretionary and consumer staples, Kersley said in economies like India where the GDP to per capita income is low of around USD 2000, consumer staples could be the area of focus but that does not mean discretionary spaces done have potential, like cars for example.

Talking about the asset class which investors might look at, he said, “The asset class that one is seeing benefit from the savings story is equity investments.”
