A woman constable and a head constable have been suspended for allegedly snatching the camera of a photojournalist during a march organised by Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students on Friday, the police said on Sunday.

Two journalists had filed separate complaints, one in connection with molestation and the other alleging assault during the protest march organised by JNU students and teachers. The police had resorted to lathi charge and use of water canons to disperse the crowd near Sanjay Jheel in Lakshmibai Nagar.

The police said, “We received a complaint from a photojournalist, who alleged that her camera had been snatched. A case was registered and investigation started. The camera has been traced and the police are in the process of contacting the photojournalist to return the camera.”

Delhi Police PRO Madhur Verma said two police personnel have been placed under suspension. “On the basis of preliminary findings, one woman constable with the Delhi Armed Police and one head constable have been placed under suspension for the unprofessional conduct of mishandling the photojournalist’s camera during crowd control.”

A group of journalists belonging to various media organisations had on Saturday protested outside Delhi Police headquarters here, demanding strict action against the personnel accused of assaulting and molesting journalists.
