A £4bn health boost will see a return to the NHS 'we had for the post war period', says Sir Simon Stevens

Theresa May will return the NHS to the “kind of health service that we had for the post war period" if she hands it a £4billion cash boost to mark its 70th birthday, the head of the NHS has said.

But Sir Simon Stevens warned that Government cuts over the past five years have left a £27billion hole in the National Health Service’s accounts.

There was speculation over the weekend that 10 Downing Street is pushing for the Treasury to release up to £4billion more for the health service to coincide with the NHS's 70th anniversary in July.

Sir Simon told MPs on the Public Accounts Committee that the extra cash would help to return NHS spending to the “trend rate of growth”.
