No Freebies For Porsche EV Customers As They’ll Pay From Day One To Use Charging Stations

Tesla may proudly offer free charging to most of its buyers, but Porsche says owners of its electric vehicles will need to pay to use its charging stations.

Speaking with GearBrain, Porsche deputy chairman of the executive board, Lutz Meschke, confirmed that the automaker’s electric car chargers will be operated as profit centers.

“Yes, we want to earn money with the new products and services. Of course. Yes,” he said.

According to Meschke, it is unsustainable to not make money from such services. Porsche will therefore price its electricity at a similar rate to gasoline and do so from the very start, rather than offering free charging to early adopters like Tesla.

“Yes we try to do this [bill from day one] of course. We can invest in the beginning. but after two or three years you have to be profitable with the new services, of course.”

Porsche intends on installing 800-volt electric car chargers, which will be capable of delivering 400 km (250 miles) of range in just 15 minutes, at its dealerships around the world. The German brand is also collaborating with BMW, Rolls-Royce, Mini, Audi, Volkswagen, Daimler and Ford to construct charging stations throughout Europe.

The first production Porsche to benefit from these fast-charging stations will be the Mission E sedan. Created as a high-performance rival to the Tesla Model S, it will offer typical Porsche luxury with class-leading performance and handling. Porsche will follow the standard Mission E with a high-riding variant recently previewed by the Cross Turismo Concept in Geneva.

I doubt they will be concerned

    • Bash

Exactly what I thought at the beginning. But what about competition!

  • Arthur Burnside

Big error – Tesla does not offer free charging to buyers of theModel S or X any more and never offered it to Model 3 buyers. What Tesla does do is give Model S and X owners 400 kWhrs of free supercharging every year . Big deal – that’s worth about $50.

    • LWOAP

So they get $50 worth of free supercharging every year. Well, I guess if you are a trying to save every nickel and dime $50 can be quite a bit.

      • salamOOn

sooo…” you are a trying to save every nickel and dime” so you can buy a tesla?

    • Not if Porsche is going to charge “gasoline money” for electricity. The point is, you can create dirt cheap energy and charge very little already – see Fastned in the Netherlands. Their stations will charge the largest Tesla battery for 30 euros. So dear Porsche, why the hell do you want to keep overcharging your customers for something that’s cheap to make?

People who buy 200k+ cars have houses with charge stations at home. Besides long road trip it these pay station will RARELY be used by the average Porsche buyer.

  • That’s the difference between a hardcore profit-oriented company, and a startup that wants to have a positive impact on our life. Keep on complaining about Teslas non-existing profits…

  • The oil industry is not worried at all…US states are already looking at charging higher automobile fees for electric vehicles, because revenues from gasoline taxes are down due to rising electric vehicle use…
