Moderate day temperature to continue along the sea

Hotter days await places in interior parts of the State. The Meteorological Department forecasts that the mercury level would escalate between 39 degree Celsius and 41 degree Celsius till Monday in interior parts of Tamil Nadu.

On Saturday, the mercury level touched 40 degree Celsius at weather stations in Madurai Airport and Tiruchi. Places like Salem, Vellore, Karur and Dharmapuri also sizzled with the maximum temperature touching 38 degree Celsius.

Officials of the Meteorological department said there may be some respite in the south, including Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli and Ramanathapuram, with showers expected in a few places on Tuesday.

However, coastal places seem to have a moderate day temperature compared to interior places. On Saturday, the weather stations in Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam registered a maximum temperature of nearly 34.8 degree Celsius and 35.4 degree Celsius, which is slightly above the average for the season.

Transition season

Officials said the interior places are experiencing searing heat as it is the transition season. Chennai’s weather will remain relatively better with partly cloudy sky and the day temperature will be around 35 degree Celsius till Monday.

Weather bloggers note that the spike in temperature has started late this year in interior places. Normally, the districts begin to experience searing heat by mid-March. Weather bloggers of Chennai Rains said the weather systems over the Bay of Bengal, including the recent depression, has kept the cool easterlies strong this year. This could be one of the reasons for most parts of the State remaining cooler until a few days ago.

The heat will start surging in coastal places like Chennai from April first week when the southern winds get stronger.
