'Moronic stupidity': Rock thrown at Gold Coast ambulance responding to emergency
A Gold Coast ambulance has not been knocked out of action for about 24 hours after a large rock was thrown and damaged the vehicle's windscreen while it was racing to an emergency situation.
Paramedics said they saw a teenager throw the rock from an overpass just before the Smith Street exit on the M1 southbound at Gaven about 12.30pm on Sunday.
Despite shattered glass falling into the cabin, no emergency services personnel were injured.
However, the ambulance was forced to pull over immediately and another unit had to be dispatched to respond to the call for help.
Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman Michael Augustus said the ambulance could have crashed into surrounding vehicles after the rock hit the windscreen. He described the teenager's actions as "moronic, senseless stupidity".
"Besides the obvious consequences this idiotic act could have caused, there may well have been a delay in getting to what could have been a life-threatening case," Mr Augustus said.
"Thankfully for the patient this crew was attending there was no detriment, but if it would have been a cardiac arrest, things could have been very different.
"Let’s hope the individual responsible takes a moment to think, it could have been one of their loved ones our crew was attending."
The damaged ambulance's windscreen was expected to be repaired on Monday morning, meaning it will have been out of action for close to 24 hours.
Mr Augustus said a report had been filed with the police, who were investigating the incident. He urged anyone with information to contact detectives or QAS.
