All India Congress Committee president Rahul Gandhi kicked off his two-day visit to Mysuru, Mandya and Chamarajanagar districts on Saturday with a visit to the famed Chamundeshwari temple atop the Chamundi Hills here.

Mr. Gandhi received a traditional welcome with ‘Poorna Kumbha’ and was ushered in to the sanctum sanctorum by a battery of priests led by Devi Prasad. He was felicitated with a shawl and was offered fruits as ‘prasadam’ after which he apprised himself of the religious significance of the place.

The famed pilgrimage and tourism spot was out of bounds for the public for almost two hours during Mr. Gandhi’s visit, with heavy security deployed around the temple precincts and the road to the hills closed for traffic.
