Several fire departments battled a 25-to-30 acre brush fire Sunday in a section of south Lee County east of Southwest Florida International Airport.

The fire, off Green Meadow Road and in a remote wooded and brushy area due east of the airport, was reported shortly before 5 p.m. and was sending up a thick black and gray column of smoke.

Units from San Carlos Park, South Trail, Bonita Springs, and Estero fire departments including the South County Strike Team's brush trucks and a fixed-wing aircraft from the Florida Forestry Service were assisting.

The forestry service aircraft made 26 water drops in an effort to contain the flames, fire officials said.

Chief Dave Cambareri, of San Carlos Park fire, said the fire was about 25 percent contained at 7:15 p.m. and occurred close to an area where there was another, smaller wildfire a few days ago.
