LUBBOCK – Former Rider standout Mercedes Brooks led Trinity Valley Community College to the 2018 National Junior College Athletics Association Division I women’s title game over the weekend.
Brooks scored a team-high 17 points for the Cardinals as they came up short against Tallahassee Community College 69-51 Saturday night in the championship at the Rip Griffin Center. Brooks was 5 of 9 from the field and 6 of 7 from the line to go along with six rebounds and a steal.
Trinity Valley (32-6) advanced to the title game with a 65-63 overtime win over No. 1 Shelton State in a Friday game that Brooks scored 15 and added eight rebounds.
Brooks, who led Rider to regional tournaments her last two years of high school, began her college career at Kansas State in 2016-17 and joined TVCC this season. Brooks led the Cardinals with 16.4 points and 7.5 rebounds, starting every game during her sophomore year.
Brooks will be able to play Division I women’s basketball next year and has multiple options for 2018-19.
