Severely injured man, left upside down on stretcher, dies

The police have filed a case against an ambulance driver who left a severely injured middle-aged man upside down on a stretcher outside the Government Medical College Hospital, Thrissur, on Tuesday. One end of the stretcher was inside the ambulance while the other end on the floor. The unidentified man, injured in an accident, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital on Saturday.

The police have registered a case against ambulance driver Shareef, 36, of Andimatam in Palakkad, under IPC section 336 (act endangering life or personal safety of others). He will be arrested soon, according to the Medical College police.

The victim was critically injured when he was hit by a motorcycle while crossing the road at Thachanattukara in Palakkad district on March 20.

He was referred from the Palakkad district hospital to the Medical College hospital as his condition became critical.

A video footage, reportedly shot by some bystanders at the medical college, showed the injured man lying upside down on the stretcher from the ambulance.

According to eyewitnesses, the ambulance driver was angry as the man in a critical condition urinated and defecated inside the ambulance. So he pulled the stretcher out when the attendant went to the hospital to collect gloves. The stretcher with the patient was kept in the upside down position till the attendant and a hospital worker came with gloves.

The patient underwent an emergency surgery. However, he died on Saturday.
