Runners of both the 5-kilometre race and the 30-kilometre race crossed the start lines Sunday morning to take part in the Around the Bay road race that's in its 124th year. 

The annual 30-kilometre race is North America's oldest road race. 

The route took runners from downtown Hamilton to Beach Boulevard towards Burlington, then North Shore Boulevard back to Hamilton for the finish line.

According to the race website, Haron Kiptoo Sirma of Toronto took first place of the 30-kilometre race in the men's category with a time of 1:35:10 and Dayna Pidhoresky of Vancouver took first place in the women's category with 1:49:38.

Ross Proudfoot of Peterborough took the men's 5-kilometre race, crossing the finish line at 00:14:36 and Gladys Tarus from Toronto finished first in the women's category at 00:17:46.

There were 3,921 participants in total for the 30-kilometre race and 2,227 participants in the 5-kilometre race.

286 people took place in the two-person relay and 277 in the three-person relay.

Sunday's race began at 9:30 a.m. for the solo 30-kilometre runners and relay participants, while those running the 5-kilometre course started at 9:45 a.m.
