Scams put govt. on back foot

The government had to defend itself from criticism over three different scams, in the Leglsative Council on Friday.

The State said it will file FIRs against 40 officials accused of siphoning foodgrain n the public distribution scheme (PDS) at Parbhani, water supply scheme at Pandharpur, and in a job placement scam at Palghar.

Council chairman Ramraje Nimbalkar directed the government to lodge an FIR against 20 officials, tehsildar, nayak tehsildar, and other district officials, who allegedly siphoned off foodgrain worth ₹4.7 crore at Parbhani. He also asked the government to file an FIR in the alleged corruption in constriction of a water supply building at Pandharpur.

“We have already suspended one officer in this scam. We will file an FIR and form a committee to investigate,” Water Supply Minister Babanrao Lonikar said in response to a question raised by legislator Ramhari Rupanwar.

In Palghar, Class IV employees in the disabled category were recruited in violation of the norms and by taking a bribe of ₹15 lakh. Minister Vinod Tawde announced an investigation by the economic offences wing (EOW) into the scam.
