Govt. allays fears of teachers

more-in

The government is seeking to allay fears of university teachers who are up in arms against the implementation of a funding policy of the Seventh Pay Commission.

As per the new funding policy, the Centre will fund 70% of the expenditure, which is being taken to mean that institutions will have to generate the remaining 30% internally, presumably through fee hikes.

Higher Education Secretary R. Subrahmanyam told The Hindu that the 70:30 policy was only for non-teaching staff and that the government would continue to fund 100% of the hike in the salaries of teachers.

He added, “Further, 70:30 is not something cast in stone. If universities do not have money because they charge low fees, they can write to us and we can exempt them from this.”

Teachers of Delhi University recently went on a strike against the move and are expected to take out a rally on March 28.
