A winter storm warning is scheduled to remain in effect for Eastern Iowa until 10 p.m. today, as several communities have issued snow emergencies.
Wet, heavy snow is expected to continue falling throughout the day today, with winds gusting up to 35 mph. Widespread snow totals of 4 to 10 inches are expected in the warning area, with some localized areas possibly seeing 10 to 12 inches. In Cedar Rapids, the snow is expected to taper off around 4 p.m., according to weather.gov.
Use caution when traveling as roads could be hazardous and visibilities could be reduced at times.
In communities issuing snow emergencies, including Cedar Rapids and North Liberty, vehicles should be removed from snow routes.
Some local events, including Sunday’s Iowa-Indiana baseball game and the St. Joseph’s Day Parade, have been canceled. In Iowa City, Shelter House staff plan to open up its low-barrier winter emergency shelter Saturday and Sunday nights.
