COHOES — At least two people and a snake found themselves without a home Friday after a fire tore through their dwelling on Continental Avenue.
The three-alarm fire broke out at approximately 5 p.m., prompting units from Cohoes, Watervliet Arsenal and Albany to respond.
The fire appeared to be most intense in the attic, according to several members of a crowd that had gathered to watch the blaze. Firefighters were forced to go through the roof and many of the side windows to battle the fire in the three-story brick building.
“We moved in three days ago from around the corner,” said one of the residents, who declined to give his name.
He was holding a blackened terrarium that firefighters retrieved from the structure. A woman who was with the man was clutching a small snake from the terrarium under her coat, although she declined to have her picture or the snake's taken.
One photographer on the scene said the couple had two snakes and a tarantula, although it wasn’t clear what happened to all the creatures.
Officials from the Cohoes Fire Department couldn’t immediately be reached on Friday evening.
