VARANASI: Five
Samajwadi Party corporators were taken under custody by Cantt police after using force on their supporters at Cultural Complex when they attacked mayor Mridula Jaiswal’s SUV following high drama during the session of Varanasi Municipal Corporation’s House.
According to reports, the election of executive body of VMC house was scheduled on Saturday. But, before the commencement of the session, the wife of a Bhartiya Janata Party corporators from Navabpura, Rohit Jaiswal, died due to ailment at a hospital. With the commencement of VMC session, the BJP corporators demanded for condolence meet and adjournment of House.
When the mayor gave her consent for it, the corporators of opposition parties including of SP,
Congress and independent went on rampage and reached till the dais. It led to a heated exchange of words between them and mayor. Before the BJP corporators and security personnel could reach there, they ransacked the dais and overturned the mayor table and chair.
BJP corporators somehow took out the mayor from the House. But, when she boarded her car the SP corporators attacked her vehicle too. They also jostled policemen when they tried to ensure safe exit of the mayor. Police had to use some force to disperse the supporters of the SP corporators. Later, the cops detained five SP corporators and took them to Cantt police station. Several SP and Congress leaders thronged Cantt police station.
The mayor, who travelled up to
Chowkaghat crossing on foot, was escorted by the BJP corporators.
