2 people killed in hostage-taking in France: reports

Two people have been killed and about a dozen wounded in a hostage-taking situation in Southwestern France on Friday, according to media reports. A gunman claiming allegiance to Islamic State fired shots and took hostages in a supermarket in the town of Trebes, south of Toulouse, around 11:15 a.m. local time (6:15 a.m. Eastern Time), the reports said. It's unclear whether there are still hostages in the supermarket. Earlier in the day, the suspect fired shots at a group of police officers on their way back from jogging near the city of Carcasonne, AP reported. None of the officers were seriously injured, but one was shot in the shoulder. French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said all information suggests the two incidents were "terrorist acts." The motive and identity of the shooter are still unclear.
