A trader was arrested by the Income Tax department here today for not paying Rs 98.34 lakh in tax and interest for a five year period between 2007-12, officials said.
"Parakash Chandra Talreja (50), owner of a plastic goods firm, was arrested under provisions of the Income Tax Act for not paying taxes despite having sufficient movable and immovable assets to do so. He also remained elusive for a long time," Principal Commissioner Income Tax Shaily Zindal told reporters.
The official said that Talreja had not responded to the department's notices asking him to pay tax.
"His firm was supposed to pay Rs 98.34 lakh tax for the period 2007-2012. Out of this, Rs 63.74 was tax and remaining amount was interest," the official said.
