Nissan is Investing Heavily into Electrified Vehicles

Nissan is aiming to sell one-million electrified vehicles annually by fiscal year 2022.

The Japanese automaker recently unveiled new plans to launch growing numbers of electrified vehicles worldwide, while expanding and evolving autonomous driving systems. It’s all part of the Nissan M.O.V.E. to 2022 midterm plan that includes several initiatives. To help hit the goal of selling one-million electrified vehicles per year, Nissan will develop eight new pure-electric vehicles, along with launching an electric car offensive in China under different brands. The company also plans to introduce an electric “kei” mini-vehicle in Japan, while the world will get an electric crossover based on the IMx Concept.

Nissan’s luxury arm, Infiniti, won’t be left in the dark either, with new Infiniti models from fiscal year 2021 being electrified. By the end of the plan, Nissan aims to equip 20 models in 20 markets with autonomous driving technology, and reach 100-percent connectivity for all Nissan, Infiniti, and Datsun vehicles sold in key markets.

The product offensive in China will be led by a new C-segment electric vehicle this year, based on the Nissan Leaf’s technology. There will also be an affordable EV developed through the Alliance joint venture eGT New Energy Automotive. That model will be developed by the Alliance and Dongfeng on an A-segment SUV platform. Lastly, two electric vehicle derivatives are being prepared for the Venucia brand.

As for Infiniti, the luxury brand expects electrified vehicles to comprise 50 percent of its global sales by 2025.

“Our product and technology strategy is dedicated to positioning Nissan to lead the automotive, technology and business evolution,” said Philippe Klein, Nissan’s chief planning officer. “Our efforts are focused on delivering Nissan Intelligent Mobility, encompassing the three core elements of electrification, autonomous drive, connectivity and new mobility services.”
