Zone 15 conservancy officials and staff recently showed their source-segregation composting yard at Chemmancherri to a group of Government officials from New Delhi, who recently came to the city as part of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (SBA) campaign. Ramesh Chandra Singh, supervisor, conservancy operations, Zone 15, Greater Chennai Corporation, said, “We explained to the officials the segregation of dry and wet waste from Wards 195 and 200.
On an average, every day, around 2000 kg of wet waste is collected from both the wards."
The manure produced from wet waste is used in gardens at parks under the jurisdiction of Zone 15 and is sold to the members of the public at reasonable rates, he pointed out.
"Less and less land is available to deposit refuse, but the volume of waste is growing all the time. Segregation of waste is the only solution to address the problem of waste."
The government officials were impressed with the segregation process and motivated us to do a good job, he added.
