Minister for Tourism and Cooperation Kadakampally Surendran will inaugurate the ‘Jalayanam’ water tourism project planned under the responsible tourism initiative at a function to be held at Mampuzha farm tourism centre near here on March 24.
The project aims at tapping the water tourism possibilities of Olavanna and Kadalundi grama panchayats covering the banks of rivers such as the Chaliyar and Mampuzha.
An aquaponics centre will be opened at the farm tourism centre. Project coordinators claimed that ‘Jalayanam’ would give more exposure to the eco-tourism destinations in the two panchayats with a focus on the Kadalundi community reserve, mangrove forests and the bird sanctuary. The Kozhikode block panchayat would play the lead role in the implementation of the project, which would try to promote eco-friendly ventures as well that could support sustainable livelihood in the region, they added.
The Malabar Botanical Garden along with the District Tourism Promotion Council, Fisheries and Forest departments will cooperate with the project implementation and the setting up of regional biodiversity parks. Promotion of traditional coir industries and pottery will get priority under the scheme.
