‘A Way Out’ Friend Pass Guide - How to Use the Free Full Game Trial

A Way Out is a co-op only experience, but the game’s developers at Hazelight Studios are letting friends get in on the action for free. In addition to standard couch co-op, the Friend Pass lets duos play the entire game online as well. This guide shows you how to use Friend Pass across PS4, Xbox One and PC.

1. When one player has purchased the full version of A Way Out, they can invite players to join a session by selecting “Play Online” and pressing the designated button to invite a friend.
2. Select the friend you’d like to play with and the invite will be sent.
3. If the player does not have A Way Out already, the invite will instruct them to download the free trial version of the game. If that does not happen, you can manually download it at these links: PS4, Xbox One, PC [Origin]. On PS4 download the demo, on Xbox One select “try for free” and choose “Play with Friend Pass” on Origin.
4. Once the download has finished, the host player can launch a lobby again, send an invite and the friend can join from their system interface.
5. Accepting the invite will boot into the lobby and the story will begin.

We’re still trying to work through the kinks ourselves, but it appears at least one person in each duo must have Xbox Live Gold or PlayStation Plus to use this feature. Just like in couch co-op, duos can save their progress and resume at a later date using the lobby process described above. Both players must use the same platform as well. We’ll tweak this guide as necessary, but the implementation appears pretty seamless across all platforms.

A Way Out is the latest game from the creators behind indie darling Brothers - A Tale Of Two Sons. However, unlike its predecessor, A Way Out is not a single-player adventure with two separate characters. This time, Hazelight has flipped the script in an attempt to bring two human beings closer together. Players take control of Leo and Vincent, two very different personalities brought together in prison. The friends plot an escape and soon learn just how much the outside world has changed since they left. This is a cinematic game with highly variable gameplay elements. From shooting to playing arcade games, there’s a little something for everyone in this very unique package.

A Way Out is available now on PS4, Xbox One and PC. The Friend Pass feature is available across all platforms.
