Three hundred homes in 20 villages now have access to solar-powered lights under an initiative that collects and upcycles e-wastes. Called the Batti Project, it was started by Bangalore-based Further& Beyond Foundation. And Tiruppur now becomes a part of the project by conducting an e-waste collection drive.
Meenakshi Todi, Sneha Parmanandka, and Saranya Rangasamy are organising the drive. All three of them work with children. Meenakshi and Sneha run Brainiacs, an activity hub for children and Saranya heads The Right Turn that organises events for schools, children, and mothers.
The three ensure they involve the children and make them aware of social issues as part of their activities with them. And the e-waste matter was one of the things they explained to them.
“We wanted to spread awareness among children about e-waste collection. Then, we decided to take it across to everyone. The good response from schools and corporate offices in our neighbourhood was a great motivator. Further& Beyond Foundation have the license from Pollution Control Board to dispose off e-waste as per the norms. The rest they up cycle as solar lamps and take it to remote pockets where there is no access to electricity. By disposing off e-waste in a safe way, you are not only contributing to a social cause but also leaving behind a healthy environment for the future,” says Meenakshi.
Go Green initiative
E-waste includes electronic equipment, computer accessories, cartridges, CDs, telephones, mobile phones, wires and cables. These items that has reached the end of their useful life are highly hazardous as they contain huge amounts of toxins which are harmful to us and to the environment

For children
Brainiacs organises an interactive workshop for children that teaches them the three R’s — Reduce, Recycle, Reuse. It is open for children aged between five and 14. A registration fee of ₹2000 covers transportation cost, snacks, and refreshments.
There will be a visit to an organic farm and a recycling paper factory besides outdoor activities, crafts and creative activities
