Parliament Logjam continues as both Houses adjourned for the day

sk

Opposition stalled the proceedings in both the Houses of Parliament for the 15th day today amid noisy scenes. The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were adjourned within minutes after they met for the day. Earlier, they paid tributes to martyrs Bhagat Singh, Raj Guru and Sukhdev.

In the Rajya Sabha, members belonging to Telugu Desam and AIADMK and Congress trooped into the well-raising slogans. The Telugu Desam has been demanding special status to Andhra Pradesh and AIADMK wanted the setting up of a Cauvery Management Board.

Congress again raised the issue of Supreme Court’s direction on Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, accusing the government of not taking firm stand to protect the rights of Dalits.

Earlier, Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu expressed his displeasure over the continued disruptions in the House for the third week today and said it is distressing. He wanted to know from the opposition how long this will continue. He said people across the country are disturbed. Immediately after that, they trooped into the well displaying placards and raising slogans. This forced Mr Naidu to adjourn the House till Monday.

The situation was no different in the Lok Sabha too. AIADMK members trooped into the well-raising slogans for setting up of Cauvery River Water Management Board came into the well. Telugu Desam Party members raised slogans from their seats. Speaker Sumitra Mahajan adjourned the House till Noon.

The same situation prevailed in the House, which re-assembled after its first adjournment. Repeated requests from the Speaker asking the members to go back to their seats to take up the no-confidence motion did not yield any result.

The Speaker then adjourned the House till Tuesday. Many members requested the Speaker that there should not be any sitting of the Lok Sabha on Monday as they will be going to their constituencies to celebrate Ram Navami. However, Rajya Sabha will sit on Monday.
