STAUNTON — The Staunton School Board approved a budget that includes 3 percent raises for employees beginning Dec. 1. If additional funds from the state become available the school board will prioritize changing the start date of the raises to Oct. 1.
The approved fiscal year 2019 operational budget for revenues and expenditures totals $31,819,000. The balanced budget is based on an enrollment of 2,550 students and the 2018 Governor’s recommended budget for revenues, which is still pending General Assembly changes and the Governor’s final approval.

The budget includes a total request of $13,150,000 from the city, an increase of $400,000 based on the revenue sharing formula.
In addition to raises, the board also approved additional teaching positions for the 2018-2019 school year.
A consumer science teacher will be added at Robert E. Lee High School, and two new teachers added to Shelburne Middle School. A part-time attendance officer will replace the family engagement specialist position and be utilized to assist the schools with managing truancy for students.
Other personnel changes include moving the Human Resources staff to the city payroll. As with other city and school shared services, the employees and departments that serve both the city and the schools are city employees.
The budget will now go to City Council for final approval.
