
Rajya Sabha Election 2018: Counting of ballots will be taken up at 5 pm, an hour after voting ends.
In West Bengal, the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress is backing Congress nominee Abhishek Manu Singhvi. There are six candidates are in the fray for the five Rajya Sabha seats from the state. The ruling Congress in Karnataka is fielded three candidates for four seats. While Congress has enough to win two seats, the BJP is sending businessman Rajeev Chandrashekhar who joined the party earlier this month. Elections will also be held for two seats in Jharkhand where three candidates are in the fray, including two of the state's ruling BJP and one of the Congress.

The contest for 10 Rajya Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh was set to go down to the wire today as the BJP worked to upstage the Samajwadi Party and Mayawati, who joined forces to defeat the ruling party in two of its key parliamentary strongholds.

Voting will be held in seven states today to fill 26 of 59 Rajya Sabha seats falling vacant; 33 candidates have been elected unopposed. The BJP is expected to gain about a dozen seats in the Upper House and consolidate its position as the largest party, but it is far from a majority in the 245-member House.
