Cambodia Spurns Civil Rights Demands as Democracy Fades

Phnom Penh’s ambassador to the U.N. dismisses criticism as politically motivated

Cambodia has rejected a statement to the United Nations from 45 countries urging it to improve its civil rights climate as Prime Minister Hun Sen strengthens authoritarian rule ahead of national elections scheduled for July.

The signatories of the letter delivered to the U.N. comprised many of the large democracies, including the U.S., that helped pay for Cambodia’s U.N.-sponsored transition to democracy in the 1990s after the civil war that followed the collapse of Pol Pot’s Khmer Rouge.
