The YSR Congress Party, CPI and CPI(M) functionaries who staged a national highway blockade at the Tungabhadra bridge on the outskirts of the city demanding special category status and fulfilment of promises made in the A.P. Reorganisation Act were arrested by the police on Thursday.
YSRCP leaders Panyam MLA Gauru Charitha Reddy, Nandikotkur MLA S. Aisaiah, former MLC Silpa Chakrapani Reddy, former MLA Muralikrishna, Kurnool Parliamentary constituency president B.Y. Ramaiah, Kurnool Assembly constituency president M.A. Hafeez Khan and others were arrested and shifted to Kurnool IV Town police station.
CPI(M) State committee member T. Shadrak, district secretary K. Prabhakara Reddy, city secretary Ghouse Desai, AIDWA president P. Nirmalamma and leaders B. Ramanjaneyulu, E. Pulla Reddy, J.N. Seshiah, Alivelamma and Ratnamma, CPI district secretary Giddaiah and leaders P. Jagannatham, S. Muneppa, Rasool and Govind were also among those arrested.
The leaders of the three parties blocked the national highway at Nandyal and Adoni.
YSRCP, CPI, CPI(M) and Jana Sena activists staged a protest on Kadapa-Rajampet bypass road.
TDP demonstration
Meanwhile, TDP functionaries demonstrated near the district party office here on Thursday demanding SCS and other benefits.
TDP district president Somisetty Venkateswarlu, Kurnool District Cooperative Central Bank chairman M. Mallikarjuna Reddy, Kurnool market committee chairman P. Purushotham Reddy, SC Corporation Director A. Prabhakar, and others staged a demonstration by holding placards and banners. The Centre promised SCS to the State, but betrayed its ally, they alleged.
