BETHLEHEM — A 14-year-old accused of making threats of school violence Wednesday has been charged with a felony, town police said.
Multiple students at Bethlehem Central Middle School reported the threats to school administrators and the school resource officer. The ongoing investigation determined there is no imminent threat, officers said Friday.
The teen, who was not identified given their age, faces one count of felony making a terroristic threat and one count of misdemeanor endangering the welfare of a child. The teen was arrested Thursday and taken to Albany County Family Court, which will handle the case.
"The Bethlehem Police Department will continue to investigate and initiate the prosecution of any individuals for threats of school violence," Deputy Chief Thomas M. Heffernan, Jr. said in a statement.
Jody Monroe, superintendent of Bethlehem Central School District, send an email to parents on Friday providing them with a summary of the situation, and reminding parents that students need to grasp the toll of making such a threat.
"Administrators at the middle school will continue to reinforce the consequences that can occur if a student makes a threat against the school," Monroe wrote. "However, it is important that this message be reinforced at home. Students need to know that these matters are serious and will be pursued as such."
"We will do all that we can to work with you to ensure that a safe environment in our schools is, and always will be, our first priority," Monroe wrote.
Anyone who hears or sees threats of school violence is asked to call the Bethlehem police at 518-439-9973 or use the Confidential Tip line at 518-439-1503.
