Integrated Scheme for Development of Silk Industry aims to achieve self-sufficiency in silk production by 2022: Smriti Irani

Minister for Textiles Smriti Irani today said that Integrated Scheme for Development of Silk Industry approved by the Cabinet yesterday aims to achieve self-sufficiency in silk production by 2022.

She said the scheme will help to increase productive employment from 85 lakh to one crore people by 2020.

Briefing media in New Delhi today, Ms Irani said, the scheme, with an outlay of over 2,161 crore rupees, will promote women's empowerment and livelihood opportunities to SC/ST and other weaker sections of the society.

She said, an inter-ministerial committee will be set up under the chairmanship of Textiles Secretary to coordinate with other ministries for Research and Development with an outlay of 1000 crore rupees.

The Minister said, the focus of Research and Development in silk is to promote improved crossbreed silk and imported Bivoltine silk so that its production increases to a level that raw silk imports become nil by 2022. This, she said, will make India self-sufficient in silk.

Ms Irani also informed that eight silk testing centres will be set up in different parts of the country. She said, 50 thousand people will be trained in technology transfer in the silk sector by 2020. The Minister said, for development of infrastructure at an individual level in the sector, the Centre’s share will be 50 per cent.

She said, in case of SC/STs for Development of Infrastructure in the sector, the Centre’s share will be 65 per cent and for North Eastern states, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh, it will be 80 per cent.
