Even as there has been a spate of resignations by veteran Congress leaders from the top post of state units and rumours being rife about Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) chief Raj Babbar putting in his papers, veteran Congress leader Pramod Tewari came out in support of Babbar claiming that the latter continued to be UP Congress chief.

Interestingly, Tewari made his claim through a press note even as Babbar was available in UPCC office on Wednesday and spoke to the media.

“I can deny with full confidence that Babbar has not quit from the UPCC post and misleading information about the above should not be spread,” asserted Tewari.

Few hours after Tewari’s denial, Babbar himself spoke to some media persons saying that he never claimed of resigning from the UPCC chief’s post and was surprised with the news doing the rounds in the media.

“After every AICC session, all existing posts and committees automatically stand dissolved. I just told one of the electronic channels that I was waiting for Rahul Gandhi to give me a new assignment and work for the party,” clarified Babbar.

“New arrangements are being worked out in Congress. I will take up whatever new position the Congress chief asks me to take up and will work for 2019,” he added.

Earlier, Babbar had refrained from commenting directly on his resignation and maintained that he would say whatever he has to when he speaks to Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

Meanwhile, Pramod Tewari also claimed that Union External Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj had mislead Parliament about the death of 39 Indians in Mosul (Iraq) by ISIS and the party would move a privilege notice against her.

Tewari also accused the Union government of not putting the correct facts before the Apex Court following which it issued orders for not making immediate arrest in cases of SC / ST atrocities. Tewari said that the government apathy would lead to increase in harassment of Dalits and downtrodden sections of the society.
