ALLAHABAD: Over 2,500 local fruit and vegetable traders have decided join hands with the district adminstration to use a portion of the
Mundera Mandi area to set up a unit for
vermicompost production.
After the day’s business, the traders would take hundreds of kilos of rotten and waste fruits and vegetables at the site for vermicompost production.
Secretary of Mundera Naveen Mandi, Renu Verma, said “After seeing hundreds of kilos of green waste in form of rotten fruits and vegetables being discarded, we have sought support of traders to set up an unit for vermipost production. The officials gave up a day’s salary and together with the traders’ help have managed to Rs 4.5 lakh to set up the unit.”
She also mentioned " mandi area spreads around 60.85 acre and as many as 10 pits are being set up for vermicompost production.
The idea of setting up vermicompost unit was planned in November last and traders have joined hands for the noble cause, she informed.
Dhananjay Singh, president of
Mundera Vyapaar Mandal said “ Of the 150-200 trucks transport fruits and vegetable at mandi premises daily and traders after dealing business, have decided to collect the waste (rotten and stale) fruits and vegetables rot because there were no takers for disposal.
Under the pilot project, traders with the help of mandi officials have finally planned to set up vermicompost production unit ( 'Vermicompost', an organic fertiliser produced from household waste, straw and shrubs with the help of earthworm) realizing the fact that vermicompost is not only environment friendly but also a deterrent to pest attack on croplands.
