PATNA: At least 12 dalit women from Rauniya Mushari tola under Naubatpur police station area met social activist Sudha Varghese on Thursday, alleging that the police unnecessarily thrashed them last Monday on suspicion of being involved in manufacturing of country liquor.

Varghese, a Padma Shri awardee, said this was second such incident in the area within two months. “Police raided the village and picked up several men allegedly involved in illegal country liquor trade. When their wives resisted, they were thrashed mercilessly by the policemen,” she said, adding Rajmania Devi (65) and Daulti Devi (40), were seriously injured. “When I called up the SHO to know if liquor was seized, he replied in negative,” Varghese said.

Patna SSP Manu Maharaaj said city SP (west) Ravindra Kumar would inquire into the matter. “The village was raided following a tip-off that country liquor was being manufactured there. One Dukhan Manjhi was arrested as there was a pending court warrant against him,” the SSP added.
