A film producer has been arrested for failing to repay a 12-year-old loan taken from the owner a production company. The Chamrajpet police on Wednesday arrested Jayasridevi, who was sent to Central Prison in Parappana Agarahara after a city court sentenced her to simple imprisonment of one year as her cheque had bounced.

The case was registered before the 18th Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) court by Anand, owner of Ashwini Picture Production, after she failed to repay a loan of ₹34 lakh with interest.

According to the police, Jayasridevi had taken the loan during the production of a movie named ‘Habba’ 12 years ago. The court had sent summons to her on multiple occasions, but she failed to appear before the court.

The court then passed an order asking her to pay ₹34 lakh with interest. However, she failed to comply with that too, following which the court issued another warrant in her name on February 8 directing the jurisdictional Chamrajpet police to arrest her and send her to prison.

On Wednesday, police arrested Jayasridevi and produced her in court. Jayasridevi’s counsel had filed an appeal in the High Court. She has produced nearly 25 other films in Kannada and other regional languages.
