Carolina Hurricanes goalie Cam Ward had an own goal for the ages after a puck became lodged in his skate during Thursday night’s game against the Arizona Coyotes.
Ward went behind his net to stop a puck that had been sent around the boards, a routine play for goalies. What happened next, however, was hardly commonplace as the puck became stuck in one of his skates.
Ward did what goalies, creatures of habit as they are, have been trained to do when they can’t find the puck: retreat to the middle of the net and look around. Unfortunately for Ward, his skates – and therefore the puck – went across the goal line in doing so.
The Hurricanes challenged the play, but the goal was upheld after a video review. Alex Goligoski, the last Coyotes player to touch the puck, was credited with the goal.
Ward and the Hurricanes appeared to have a beef as to why the play wasn't blown dead.
Here's the text from Rule 85.3:
Puck Out of Sight – Should a scramble take place or a player accidentally fall on the puck and the puck be out of sight of the Referee, he shall immediately blow his whistle and stop the play. The puck shall then be faced-off at the nearest face-off spot in the zone where the play was stopped unless otherwise provided for in the rules.
