Surat: Diamond baron and developer Vasant Gajera was produced in a local court on Thursday which remanded him in police custody till Tuesday. Gajera was arrested on Wednesday from Umra police station area on a complaint by Vajubhai alias Vrajlal Nagji Malani (60), a resident of Puna Patiya, on Kadodara Road. The complaint was registered by the police after months of delay on Wednesday after an order by Gujarat High Court.

Gajera had forged documents to prove possession of 18,500 square metre of land in Vesu, which is estimated to be worth Rs 100 crore, Malani alleged. The complainant said the accused had earlier prepared a purchase deed of the land and then to prove its possession he produced vouchers and documents in the court.

“We requested custody of the accused to investigate who else was involved in the forgery. We will try to find out how he had forged the documents and if he had done similar forgeries earlier too,” the police said.

Gajera is younger brother of Dhiru Gajera, Congress candidate from Varachha constituency during 2017 assembly elections. In the past, his younger brother Chuni Gajera was arrested for alleged involvement in a land grabbing case. Gajera owns Laxmi Diamond, a leading diamond trading group, and has offices in many countries. He also owns Laxmi Developers that has built many commercial and residential projects in the city.
