Will be used to update parents on their children’s academic performance

From the coming 2018-19 academic year, government school students, like their counterparts in private schools, will get diaries, which will be used to update parents on their children’s academic performance, among other things.

Primary and Secondary Education Minister Tanveer Sait said that this was to help parents keep abreast with how their children were faring in school. “Currently, parents are not very clued in to their child’s academic progress. We hope that this will help bridge the gap,” said Mr. Sait. He added that if parents were unable to read the teachers’ comments in the diary, they could seek the assistance of someone in their locality.

Regular meetings

The department will introduce parent teacher meetings every three months. This move has been welcomed by faculty members and parents. A government school teacher in north Bengaluru said that this would help improve the learning outcomes of students as parents would become more involved.

Sarojamma, who works as a domestic help, too, believes that there is some merit to this idea. “Although we may not be in a position to understand what our children are learning or help teach them ourselves, we would like to know how they stand compared to the rest of the class. It would be nice to know if they are attending school regularly, paying attention in class and submitting their homework on time,” she said.
