Two students and a bike rider were killed in a freak accident at Vadagur Gate off NH 75 on the outskirts of Kolar on Thursday evening. The tragedy occurred while the students were on their way home after attending school.

Police gave the name of the victims as Narayanaswamy (13), a class seven student, Sudarshan (14), a class eight student, and bike rider Venkatappa. Two other students were injured.

Eyewitnesses said a car, in an attempt to avoid the motor bike, ran over the students, who were standing by the roadside at around 5 p.m. But the police maintained the bike hit the students as the bike rider lost control of the vehicle when it was hit by the speeding car.

The car was coming from Bengaluru and proceeding towards Mulbagal. According to police sources, the car driver reportedly panicked as the motor bike came in his path all of a sudden.

The injured students were admitted to R.L. Jalappa Hospital at Tamaka.

Protest staged

The accident triggered protest by relatives of the deceased students and villagers. Traffic on NH 75 was affected and police had a tough time controlling the mob and regulating the traffic.

The police took the car driver into custody.
