A local court on Wednesday convicted a 26-year-old man for sexually assaulting a 3-1/2-year-old girl who used to attend his mother's play school. The convict, Sanjay S, a resident of RPC Layout in Vijayanagar, was sentenced to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 50,000 under the Pocso Act.

The case was registered in 2017 and the police had also named Sanjay's mother Shobha Sathish as the co-accused in the case. Though Shobha was accused of negligence leading to the crime, the court later acquitted her as it found no culpability of the woman in the crime.

Special public prosecutor K R Subhash, who appeared for the victim, said the conviction was given largely on the irrefutable statement made by the victim. "Her statement was the same before the police and the court. She also identified her assailant during the identification parade. His phone was confiscated during the time of the arrest and was sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory for analysis. A report by FSL revealed Sanjay had stored child pornography in his mobile phone which strengthened the case for his conviction.
